Sonja Ewen

Sonja Ewen is an Irish jeweller whose passion for Sea Kayaking the wild Atlantic coastline inspires many of her designs. She works from her studio in the peaceful setting of Marlay Park in Dublin.

She designs and makes each piece, working in gold and silver, setting precious and semi-precious stones and fossils into her creation using a variety of different techniques: piercing, texturing, soldering and cuttlefish casting. The beauty and drama of Ireland’s seas, coasts and islands constantly comes through in Sonja’s work.

The cuttlefish shell range uses the shells which she has found when landing on beaches in her sea kayak is soft enough to carve and yet can withstand the heat of molten silver. Sonja cuts the shape of a shell into two pieces of cuttlefish, fits them tightly together and pours in the molten silver to take up the shape of the shell. Her kayaking pendants are pierced from sheets of Silver and 18ct Gold. The sheets are layered one on top of the other and then soldered together. Sonja makes a range of pendants, neckpieces, earrings, lapel pins, cufflinks and also one off commission pieces, so you can even have your favourite kayak handmade in silver.
