In an ideal world, specially designed kayak carriers like J bars or shaped cradles would be used. These can be expensive, however, and are not strictly necessary if you follow the instructions below.

  • Remove hatch covers when transporting.
  • We advice fastening the kayak upside down on a padded roof rack unless it is being carried in a customised rack such as J bars or V bars. If you have an upright bar on your roof rack the kayak can be transported on it's side on padded bars.
  • Use hand tightening straps only. Do not use any ratchets or mechanical assistance as this could damage your kayak.
  • The bow and stern should be tied to the front and rear of the vehicle.
  • Try to park the car in a shaded area. The surface temperature of dark coloured kayaks can increase as much as 20°F (11°C) more than white surfaces.
