What You Need:
- Allen key set
- Hand router
- Acetone
- Adequate safety equipment
- 40 grit sandpaper
- Wax
- Gel and hardener
- Resin and hardener
- Fibreglass matting
- Marker pen
- Masking tape
- Brushes
Method:
- Use the Allen key to undo the grub screw located in the skeg operating slider near the cockpit area to release the skeg wire from the skeg slider.
- Turn the kayak upside down and use the Allen key to undo the two bolts on the front and back of the skeg cassette. Remove the skeg cassette and the wire should follow.
- Inspect the damaged area and mark it with a marker pen.
- Using the hand router, carefully router the damaged area alongside the plastic lip of the skeg box, avoiding any damage to the plastic lip and keeping the depth around 8mm.
- Clean up any dust and grit, then use masking tape to protect the area from resin or gel splashes.
- Mix a little resin with hardener, wet out small pieces of fibreglass matting, and fill the routered hole with the wetted matting.
- Use a brush to ensure there are no air pockets in the repair.
- Leave the repair to harden.
- Once hardened, sand the area smooth with the 40 grit sandpaper. Mix gel with hardener and a little wax, then brush the gel on top of the repaired area. Clean any drips with a cloth dipped in acetone, using gloves for protection.
- Reassemble by following steps 1 and 2 in reverse to reconnect the skeg cassette.
